The Best Youth Hockey Goal Songs (and How to Play Them at the Rink)

hockeymusicgoal songsparents

Every rink has a parent on the bench with a phone and a speaker. This is for that parent.

The song matters less than the cue

A goal celebration at a youth game is about twelve seconds long. The horn takes the first three. Whatever song you pick, the part that matters is the part that plays in the nine seconds after the horn, so the single most useful thing you can do is start the song at the hook instead of the intro.

Thunderstruck is the classic example. The riff everyone wants is fifty-five seconds in. Played from the top, the kids are lined up at centre ice before it gets there.

The songs every rink plays

These are the goal songs that show up at youth, junior and beer-league rinks across the US and Canada, and why they work:

  • Chelsea Dagger (The Fratellis). The Blackhawks' song. The "da da da" chorus is instant and every kid knows it.
  • Song 2 (Blur). Two seconds of silence, then "woo-hoo." The fastest payoff there is.
  • Kernkraft 400 (Zombie Nation). The stadium chant. Start it at the chant.
  • Seven Nation Army (The White Stripes). The riff the whole bench can sing, at 8U and in beer league.
  • I'm Shipping Up to Boston (Dropkick Murphys). The Bruins' home-ice anthem and the New England default.
  • Crowd Chant (Joe Satriani). Written to be shouted back.
  • Jump Around (House of Pain). The horn stab at the top is a goal horn by itself.
  • Sandstorm (Darude). The drop at about a minute in is the goal.

The horn

The horn is the other half. NHL horns are marine and locomotive air horns bolted to the building, and every building sounds different. We put every NHL team's horn on one page so you can hear them, and any of them can be the horn your bench uses.

Playing it at the rink

We built a free board for exactly this: tourneyhunter.com/music. It opens ready to play on any phone with warmups, goal songs, stoppage tracks, power play and penalty kill already loaded. Tap GOAL and it sounds the horn, then plays a goal song. Tap any song to play it. Swap in your own, pick your team's horn, and share one link with the bench so any parent can run it.

No signup, no app, no fee. It runs on YouTube, so it needs a signal like any streaming music; the six built-in air horns are stored on the phone and fire even where the rink has none.

Warmups and stoppages too

Goal songs get the attention, but the warmup skate, the flood and the power play are where most of the music actually gets played. Those lists, sorted by moment, are at tourneyhunter.com/music/warmup-songs.

Bring a speaker. The rink's PA is for the home team.
